Eye screening and diabetes

Diabetes, when not properly controlled, can affect your eyes. Long-term high levels of blood glucose can cause damage to the small blood vessels that supply oxygen to your retinas (the light-sensitive linings at the back of your eyes that give you vision). This leads to a condition called Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), which develops slowly, and usually without symptoms, over many years. In the early stages, it will not affect your vision, but later stages of DR can result in sudden loss of vision.

It is thus essential to go for annual retinal and eye screening.
